Hymn paying homage to the Auspicious One
रश्मिं नमाम्येव शिवस्य नान्दीं
कृत्वा स्वधर्मं करणीयमेकम् ।
समाकुलं यो रसनेन याजेर्
देवीनयस्योत्तमसंनिकर्षः ॥१॥
Raśmiṃ namāmyeva śivasya nāndīṃ
kṛtvā svadharmaṃ karaṇīyamekam |
Samākulaṃ yo rasanena yājer
devīnayasyottamasaṁnikarṣaḥ || 1 ||
I salute (namāmi…eva) the Ray of the Joy of Śiva (śivasya…nāndīm… raśmim), Who (yaḥ) after performing (kṛtvā) one’s duty (sva-dharmam) that is the only one (ekam) to be done (karaṇīyam) full of (samākulam) the Taste (rasanena) of Sacrifice (yājeḥ) (, became) the first receptacle (uttama-saṁnikarṣaḥ) of the Teaching of the Goddess (devī-nayasya). || 1 ||
रश्मिः परामप्सरसं प्रणौमी-
हान्तश्चरा स्वाध्यि ककारदेवीम् ।
सुशीतलाकूजनकानसार्धं
पट्या विनिष्क्रामति या मणीनाम् ॥२॥
Raśmiḥ parāmapsarasaṃ praṇaumī-
hāntaścarā svādhyi kakāradevīm |
Suśītalākūjanakānasārdhaṃ
paṭyā viniṣkrāmati yā maṇīnām || 2 ||
I bow down (praṇaumi) to the Supreme Celestial Nymph (parām…apsarasam), The Goddess of the letter ‘Ka’ (ka-kāra-devīm), Who (yā) is the Ray (which) Moves inside (raśmiḥ…antaḥ-carā) an attentive one (svādhyi) in this world (iha), (and) steps out (viniṣkrāmati) from behind the curtain (paṭyāḥ) with the sound of the freezing silence of (su-śīta-lā-kūjana-kāna-sārdham) (Her) Jewels (maṇīnām). || 2 ||
वन्देऽहमुल्लङ्घनरश्मिदण्डम्
आचक्रिमारोहमतः श्मशानम् ।
यदेव देवीकुलसंनिपातं
चक्रस्य भानुं शिवशक्तिगर्भाम् ॥३॥
Vande'hamullaṅghanaraśmidaṇḍam
ācakrimārohamataḥ śmaśānam |
Yadeva devīkulasaṁnipātaṃ
cakrasya bhānuṃ śivaśaktigarbhām || 3 ||
I (aham) venerate (vande) that Beam of the Rays of Transgression (ullaṅghana-raśmi-daṇḍam) (which) turns (ācakrim) pride (āroham…ataḥ) into a Cremation Ground (śmaśānam) that is nothing but (yat…eva) the Lustre (bhānum) of the Wheel (cakrasya) of assembly of the Clan --i.e. the senses-- of the Goddess (devī-kula-saṁnipātam) that is the Womb of Śiva and Śakti (śiva‑śakti‑garbhām). || 3 ||
संत्यागरश्मिं प्रवदं स्वरूपं
पर्युत्सुकाय प्रतिसंक्रमाय ।
वियाति कालस्यघनं प्रबोधं
निराकुलं यः प्रतिभां प्रनौमि ॥४॥
Saṃtyāgaraśmiṃ pravadaṃ svarūpaṃ
paryutsukāya pratisaṁkramāya |
Viyāti kālasyaghanaṃ prabodhaṃ
nirākulaṃ yaḥ pratibhāṃ pranaumi || 4 ||
I bow down (pranaumi) to the Ray of Renunciation (saṃtyāga-raśmim), to the Essential Nature (svarūpam) of Awakening (prabodham) which is sounding forth (pravadam) through (yaḥ…viyāti) the clouds of Time (kālasya-ghanam) (as) the clearness (nirākulam) of understanding (pratibhām) for (those who) are desirous (pari-ut-sukāya) of reabsorption (prati-saṁ-kramāya). || 4 ||
भूतेर्मरीचिं सरहस्यमोघं
वक्त्रं गुरोस्तु स्वरितुं प्रनौमि ।
उन्मज्जनं चेतसि नित्यकालं
निर्देशरूपेण तु योगिनीनाम् ॥५॥
Bhūtermarīciṃ sarahasyamoghaṃ
vaktraṃ gurostu svarituṃ pranaumi |
Unmajjanaṃ cetasi nityakālaṃ
nirdeśarūpeṇa tu yoginīnām || 5 ||
I bow down (pranaumi) to the Ray of Existence (bhūteḥ…marīcim) that is the Speech (vaktram) of the Guru (guroḥ…tu) (which) makes the Uninterrupted Tradition (ogham) resound (svaritum), (and) constantly (nitya-kālam) emerging (un-majjanam) in mind (cetasi) with the mystical doctrine (sa-rahasyam) in the form of the Commands (nirdeśa-rūpeṇa…tu) of the Yoginī-s (yoginīnām). || 5 ||
उद्द्योतरश्मिं सततं यदर्णं
खरैः समं सिंहनखैर्नमामि ।
चक्रेश्वरीसारमुपावृतम् योऽ
ज्ञानस्य वा सम्प्रकरोति कर्त्ता ॥६॥
Uddyotaraśmiṃ satataṃ yadarṇaṃ
kharaiḥ samaṃ siṃhanakhairnamāmi |
Cakreśvarīsāramupāvṛtam yo'
jñānasya vā samprakaroti karttā || 6 ||
I bow (namāmi) to the Ray of Revelation (uddyota-raśmim), to the constant (satatam) Wave (arṇam) which is (yat) like (samam) the sharp (kharaiḥ) claws of a lion (siṃha-nakhaiḥ), (and) cuts off (karttā) (the cloak of) ignorance (ajñānasya…vā) that (yaḥ) veils (upāvṛtam…samprakaroti) the Essence of the Mistress of the Wheel (cakra-īśvarī-sāram). || 6 ||
नवानि गुप्तानि वृतो य एवं
पृथून्महिष्ठानभिचाकशीति ।
वाक्चापलं चित्तमिहैव मूल्ये
तं यस्य रश्मिं सततं नमामि ॥७॥
Navāni guptāni vṛto ya evaṃ
pṛthūnmahiṣṭhānabhicākaśīti |
Vākcāpalaṃ cittamihaiva mūlye
taṃ yasya raśmiṃ satataṃ namāmi || 7 ||
I always (satatam) salute (namāmi) that (tam) truly (evam) hidden Ray (vṛtaḥ…raśmim) (which) repeatedly illuminates (yaḥ…abhi-cākaśīti) the greatest (mahiṣṭhān) (and) extensive (pṛthūn) new (navāni) secrets (guptāni), (of which) the flickering (cāpalam) speech (vāk) and mind (cittam) are the price (yasya…mūlye) in this world (iha…eva). || 7 ||
तं लेखनीयस्य नमामि रश्मिं
क्षेमं समर्थं प्रतिबोधनस्य ।
समुद्धरत्युत्पलमेव शादाच्-
च्युतात्मनां यः प्रतिबन्धकारी ॥८॥
Taṃ lekhanīyasya namāmi raśmiṃ
kṣemaṃ samarthaṃ pratibodhanasya |
Samuddharatyutpalameva śādāc-
cyutātmanāṃ yaḥ pratibandhakārī || 8 ||
I venerate (namāmi) that (tam) Ray (raśmim) (that) wishes to pull out (yaḥ…sam-ut-dharati) the lotus (utpalam…eva) from the mud (śādāt), (and) competent (samartham) in preserving Teachings (kṣemam…prati-bodhanasya) (that) must be written down (lekhanīyasya) (by) creating obstacles (prati-bandha-kārī) for those whose minds are deviated from the Truth (cyuta-ātmanāṃ). || 8 ||
आक्रान्त इष्टं प्रियया मरीचिर्-
यो वृन्दचक्रक्रमकाव्यदण्डः ।
कन्था च शूला च कपाल एवा-
नन्दं च यस्या अभिकाशयन्ति ॥९॥
Ākrānta iṣṭaṃ priyayā marīcir-
yo vṛndacakrakramakāvyadaṇḍaḥ |
Kanthā ca śūlā ca kapāla evā-
nandaṃ ca yasyā abhikāśayanti || 9 ||
The Ray (marīciḥ) which is (yaḥ) the Churning Stick of the Wisdom of the Process of the Wheel of Totality (vṛnda-cakra-krama-kāvya-daṇḍaḥ) is approached (ākrāntaḥ) voluntarily (iṣṭam) by the Beloved (priyayā), Whose (yasyāḥ) patched garment (kanthā), trident (śūlā) and (ca…ca…ca) skull (kapālaḥ) truly (eva) illuminate (abhi-kāśayanti) Spiritual Bliss (ānandam). || 9 ||
अध्यर्धहेतोः सततं च विंशं
सोमस्य नान्दीं धिय आत्मदृष्टिम् ।
क्रोधावतारस्य परां प्रपञ्चं
रश्मिं कुलज्ञानमुखस्य वन्दे ॥१०॥
Adhyardhahetoḥ satataṃ ca viṃśaṃ
somasya nāndīṃ dhiya ātmadṛṣṭim |
Krodhāvatārasya parāṃ prapañcaṃ
raśmiṃ kulajñānamukhasya vande || 10 ||
I forever (satatam) praise (vande) the Ray of the Joy of Nectar (raśmim…somasya…nāndīm) (that is) the Supreme (parām) Vision of the Self (ātmā-dṛṣṭim), (and) the twentieth (viṃśam) expansion (prapañcam) of the mind (dhiya) of the Incarnation of Wrath (krodha-avatārasya) (Who is) the Source of Adhyardha --i.e. “the additional half”-- (adhi-ardha-hetoḥ), (and) the Mouth of the Wisdom of the Kula (kula-jñāna-mukhasya). || 10 ||
रश्मिं दुरालोकमतीव कासूम्
अनश्वरां निर्वचनान्निगूढाम् ।
मेलापनस्वानुभवाविलुप्त-
निष्ठादनाख्यां विमलान्नमामि ॥११॥
Raśmiṃ durālokamatīva kāsūm
anaśvarāṃ nirvacanānnigūḍhām |
Melāpanasvānubhavāvilupta-
niṣṭhādanākhyāṃ vimalānnamāmi || 11 ||
I wholeheartedly (atīva) venerate (namāmi) the Dazzling Ray of Secret Understanding (dur-ālokam…raśmim…nigūḍhām…kāsūm) (that is) the Immortal (anaśvarām) Nameless One (anākhyām) (Who) rises from pristine (vimalāt) explanation (nirvacanāt), (Which is) resting on the protection of one’s own experience (which) belongs to the process of Union (melāpana-sva-anubhava-avilupta-niṣṭhāt). || 11 ||
रश्मिं दयां खादति कालकूटं
यः शोणितावारिनिधेः प्रनौमि ।
तत्स्थानवैराग्यकृते किलैवं
स्वधाम्नि मेघा इव सम्प्रलीनः ॥१२॥
Raśmiṃ dayāṃ khādati kālakūṭaṃ
yaḥ śoṇitāvārinidheḥ pranaumi |
Tatsthānavairāgyakṛte kilaivaṃ
svadhāmni meghā iva sampralīnaḥ || 12 ||
I salute (pranaumi) the Ray of Compassion (raśmim…dayām), which (yaḥ) consumes (khādati) the poison --lit. ‘the trap of Time’-- (kāla-kūṭam), (which is) emerging from the ocean of blood --i.e. awareness‑- (śoṇitā-vārinidheḥ), and merely (kila-evam) for the sake of the renunciation of his position (tat-sthāna-vairāgyakṛte), dissolves (sam-pralīnaḥ) into one’s own Abode (sva-dhāmni) like (iva) clouds (meghā). || 12 ||
भट्टारिकां ग्रहणमेवमनाथछायाम्
ऐशप्रभोस्तु परमाशिवशक्तिमेकाम् ।
देवीं त्रयोदशमहारविरीश्वरीं व-
न्दे द्वादशस्य किरणेषु तु कालिकायाः ॥१३॥
Bhaṭṭārikāṃ grahaṇamevamanāthachāyām
aiśaprabhostu paramāśivaśaktimekām |
Devīṃ trayodaśamahāravirīśvarīṃ va-
nde dvādaśasya kiraṇeṣu tu kālikāyāḥ || 13 ||
I praise (vande) the most venerable (bhaṭṭārikām) Devī or Goddess (devīm) (Who is) the Highest Power of Śiva (paramā-śiva-śaktim), (and) the Mistress (īśvarīm) of the Supreme Lord (aiśa-prabhoḥ), (and) the Great Thirteenth Sun (trayodaśa-mahā-raviḥ) in the middle of the twelve Rays (of the senses) (dvādaśasya…kiraṇeṣu…tu), (and) the only (ekām) Shelter of the helpless ones (anātha-chāyām), (and) the Hand (grahaṇam) of Kālikā (kālikāyāḥ) indeed (evam)! || 13 ||
असौ गुरुक्रमो देवीकुलं यः स्तावकं मया ।
वाक्त्रयोन्मेषविस्फूर्जितोदयनं स्वरूपतः॥
Asau gurukramo devīkulaṃ yaḥ stāvakaṃ mayā |
Vāktrayonmeṣavisphūrjitodayanaṃ svarūpataḥ ||
The (asau) Succession of Guru-s (guru-krama) I (mayā) extoll (stāvakam) as (yaḥ) the ‘Devīkula’ (devī-kulam), is a sudden manifestation of the threefold blooming of Speech (vāk-traya-unmeṣa-visphūrjita-udayanam), (appeared) naturally (sva-rūpataḥ). ||
॥इति दविद्दुर्वासःपाणिपल्लवविकासितश्रीमङ्गलास्तोत्रं समाप्तम्॥
|| Iti daviddurvāsaḥpāṇipallavavikāsitaśrīmaṅgalāstotraṃ samāptam ||
This (iti) venerable Maṅgalāstotram or
the ‘Hymn paying homage to the Auspicious One’,
written by David Durvāsāḥ (david-durvāsaḥ-pāṇi-pallava-
vikāsita-śrī-maṅgalā-stotram) is finished (samāptam). ||
