Fifteen verses on Consciousness
anastamitabhārūpastejasāṃ tamasāmapi |
ya eko' ntaryadantaśca tejāṃsi ca tamāṃsi ca || 1 ||
sa eva sarvabhūtānāṃ svabhāvaḥ parameśvaraḥ |
bhāvajātaṃ hi tasyaiva śaktirīśvaratāmayī || 2 ||
The Solitary One (ekaḥ), Who (yaḥ) is the Nature of Infinite Light (anastamita-bhārūpaḥ) in both light (tejasām) and (api) darkness (tamasām), as (He) is internal (antaḥ), (but also) keeps light and darkness internally (yat…antaḥ…ca…ca…ca…tejāṃsi…tamāṃsi), is only (eva) the (saḥ) Supreme Lord (parama-īśvaraḥ), the Essential Nature (svabhāvaḥ) of all the living beings (sarva-bhūtānām). And (hi) Creation (bhāvajātam) is only His Power (tasya…eva…śaktiḥ), composed of Lordship (īśvaratā-mayī). || 1 - 2 ||
śaktiśca śaktimadrūpādvyatirekam na vāñchati |
tādātmyamanayornityaṃ vahnidāhikayoriva || 3 ||
And (ca) the Power or Śakti (śaktiḥ) assumes no separation (vyatirekam…na…vāñchati) from Her Holder --i.e. from Śiva-- (śaktimat-rūpāt). They (anayoḥ) are perpetually (nityam) the same (tādātmyam) like (iva) fire and heat (vahni-dāhikayoḥ). || 3 ||
sa eva bhairavo devo jagadbharaṇalakṣaṇaḥ |
svātmādaṛśe samagraṃ hi yacchaktyā pratibimbitam || 4 ||
The (saḥ) God (devaḥ) is only (eva) Bhairava (bhairavaḥ), the Maintainer of the world (jagat-bharaṇa-lakṣaṇaḥ), and (hi) everything (samagram) which (yat) is reflected (pratibimbitam) by Śakti (śaktyā) (appears) in the mirror of His own Self (svātmā-ādarśe). || 4 ||
tasyaivaiṣā parā devī svarūpāmarśanotsukā |
pūrṇatvaṃ sarvabhāveṣu yasyā nālpaṃ na cādhikam || 5 ||
This (eṣā) Supreme (parā) Goddess (devī) belongs only to Him (tasya…eva), (and She) is eager to be aware of His Essential Nature (svarūpa-āmarśana-utsukā). Her (yasyāḥ) Fullness (pūrṇatvam) in all beings (sarva-bhāveṣu) is not (na) ‘less’ (alpam) and (ca) not (na) ‘more’ (adhikam). || 5 ||
eṣa devo' nayā devyā nityaṃ krīḍārasotsukaḥ |
vicitrānsṛṣṭisaṃhārānvidhatte yugapadvibhuḥ || 6 ||
This (eṣaḥ) God (devaḥ) constantly (nityam) enjoys the Taste of Play (krīḍā-rasa-utsukaḥ) through this (anayā) Goddess (devyā). (Along with Her, He) pervades everything (vibhuḥ) while (yugapat) (He) performs (vidhatte) the various acts (vicitrān) of Manifestation and Withdrawal (sṛṣṭi-saṃhārān). || 6 ||
atidurghaṭakāritvamasyānuttarameva yat |
etadeva svatantratvamaisvaryaṃ bodharūpatā || 7 ||
His (asya) Acts are performed only by Him and no other entity (ati-durghaṭa-kāritvam). This means (yat): (His) Doership is Absolute (anuttaram…eva), (and) only (eva) this (etat) is Freedom (svatantratvam) (or) Sovereignty (aisvaryam), (and) Intelligence (bodha-rūpatā). || 7 ||
paricchinnaprakāśatvaṃ jaḍasya kila lakṣaṇam |
jaḍādvilakṣaṇo bodho yato na parimīyate || 8 ||
It is well known that the (apparently) limited or divided condition of Light (paricchinna-prakāśatvam) belongs (lakṣaṇam) to the coagulated (state) (jaḍasya). Bodha or Consciousness (bodhaḥ) is different (vilakṣaṇaḥ) from that coagulated state (jaḍāt), since (yataḥ) (It) cannot be measured (na…parimīyate). || 8 ||
evamasya svatantrasya nijaśaktyupabhedinaḥ |
svātmagāḥ sṛṣṭisaṃhārāḥ svarūpatvena saṃsthitāḥ || 9 ||
This way (evam), due to His (asya) Freedom (svatantrasya) (, Which) subdivides through His own Śakti (nija-śakti-upabhedinaḥ), exist (saṃsthitāḥ) the Manifestation and Withdrawal (of the world) (sṛṣṭi-saṃhārāḥ) (, which) rest in His own Self (svātmagāḥ) through His Essential Nature (svarūpatvena). || 9 ||
teṣu vaicitryamatyantamūrdhvādhastiryageva yat |
bhuvanāni tadaṃśāśca sukhaduḥkhamatiśca yā || 10 ||
In them (teṣu), various (vaicitryam) endless (atyantam) (manifestations take place) in the upper plane, in the lower plane (ūrdhva-adhaḥ) (and) on both sides (tiryag…eva), and (ca) its portions (tat-aṃśāḥ) are the worlds (bhuvanāni), and (ca) experience of pleasure and pain (exists in them) (sukha-duḥkha-matiḥ…yā). || 10 ||

yadetasyāparijñānaṃ tatsvātantryaṃ hi varṇitam |
sa eva khalu saṃsāro mūḍānāṃ yo vibhīṣakaḥ || 11 ||
The lack of understanding (aparijñānam) this (etasya) is also (hi) His Freedom (tat-svātantryam), which (yat) (lack of understanding) is called (varṇitam) saṃsāra (saṃsāraḥ), which (yaḥ) is (saḥ…eva…khalu) frightening (vibhīṣakaḥ) to the deluded ones (mūḍānām). || 11 ||

tatprasādarasādeva gurvāgamata eva vā |
śāstrādvā parameśasya yasmātkasmādupāgatam || 12 ||
yattattvasya parijñānaṃ sa mokṣaḥ parameśataḥ |
tatpūrṇatvaṃ prabuddhānāṃ jīvanmuktiśca sā smṛtā || 13 ||
From the Taste of His Favour (tat-prasāda-rasāt…eva), or (vā) from the Guru’s Revelation (guru-āgamataḥ) or (vā) from the Scriptures (śāstrāt) of the Supreme Lord (parameśasya) (received) in any way (yasmāt…kasmāt), Perfect Understanding (parijñānam) of Reality (tattvasya) takes place (upāgatam) which (yat) is Mokṣa or Liberation (saḥ…mokṣaḥ). It (tat) is the Perfect Condition (tat pūrṇatvam) of the Supreme Lord (parama-īśataḥ) (realized by) Awakened Ones (prabuddhānām), and (ca) It (sā) is called (smṛtā) Jīvanmukti or Liberation in life (jīvanmuktiḥ). || 12 - 13 ||
etau bandhavimokṣau ca parameśasvarūpataḥ |
na bhidyete na bhedo hi tattvataḥ parameśvare || 14 ||
Moreover (ca), this (pair called) (etau) ‘bondage’ and ‘liberation’ (bandha-vimokṣau) is not (na) different (bhidyete) from the Essential Nature of the Supreme Lord (parama-īśa-sva-rūpataḥ), (since) no (na) duality (bhedaḥ…hi) (exists) in the Supreme Lord (parama-īśvare), in real sense (tattvataḥ). || 14 ||

itthamicchākalājñānaśaktiśūlāmbujāśritaḥ |
bhairavaḥ sarvabhāvānāṃ svabhāvaḥ pariśīlyate || 15 ||
This way (ittham), Bhairava (bhairavaḥ), the Essential Nature (svabhāvaḥ) of everything and everyone (sarva-bhāvānām) is to be meditated upon (pariśīlyate) (as) Resting on the Threefold Lotus of Icchā, Jñāna and Kriyā Śakti-s (icchā-kalā-jñāna-śakti-śūla-ambuja-āśritaḥ). || 15 ||

I, Abhinavagupta (wrote) (abhinavaguptena) these (ime) fifteen verses (pañca-daś-uditāḥ…ślokāḥ) to disciples (śiṣyān) with weak understanding (sukumāra-matīn) to illuminate (them) (prabodhayitum) immediately (añjasā). ||
